There’s a lot of buzz about the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar, or ACV, and how it helps in weight loss.
So, to help me understand better, I looked into it myself and discovered what’s all this craze about.
Once you finish reading this post, you’ll have a better understanding of what ACV can do for you when it comes to weight loss.
Here’s what I found.

First, let’s quickly talk about a few interesting facts about Apple Cider Vinegar.
The word vinegar comes from the Latin words vinum acer, which means sour wine. Wine, after sitting for a while, undisturbed, turns into vinegar (acetic acid).
Vinegar is a versatile substance. Prior to antibiotics, vinegar was used to clean wounds because of its antimicrobial properties.
Vinegar is still widely used as a cleaning substance, and because of its antimicrobial capacities, vinegar is also used to preserve food (pickling).
Interestingly enough, there are references in the Old Testament and from Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, that describe vinegar as being used as a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and wound healer.
As a healing protocol, Hippocrates prescribed fasting and the consumption of Apple Cider Vinegar.
Moreover, in China, around the 10th century, vinegar was used as an antiseptic hand wash to prevent infection.
Early US medical practitioners used vinegar to treat croup, stomachache, fever, and edema.
In some cultures, carbohydrate foods are combined with vinegar for consumption with meals.
For instance, Italians eat bread dipped in oil and vinegar. Vinegar, when added to sushi rice, reduces rice’s glycemic index by 20 to 40 percent.
Fish and chips are often eaten with malt vinegar. Good stuff!
Adding vinegar to sushi rice lowers white rice’s glycemic index (GI) by almost 40 percent.
Likewise, adding pickled vegetables and fermented soybeans (natto) to white rice also lowers its glycemic index significantly.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is made by crushing fresh apples and allowing them to mature in barrels with added yeast, which then ferment into alcohol.
Bacteria are added to ferment the alcohol into vinegar for a second stage of fermentation.
When the vinegar is mature, it will display a dark and cloudy bacterial foam called “mother” that is easily seen when the vinegar is held to the light.
Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother means that it is unfiltered and contains protein, living enzymes, and friendly bacteria used to make it.
How Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help with Weight Loss?
To help with weight loss, dilute 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a glass of water and drink it before a meal.
Remember to drink with a straw to protect your teeth.
Studies show that vinegar helps with insulin resistance as it controls insulin spikes significantly. Two teaspoons of vinegar taken with a high-carbohydrate meal lower blood sugar and insulin levels by as much as 34%.
Vinegar triggers a protective effect on the body’s insulin response when eating carbohydrates.
Type 2 diabetics who are not on insulin and drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in water at bedtime can reduce their fasting morning blood sugars.
At the same time, higher doses of vinegar seem to increase satiety, which results in slightly lower caloric intake in the range of 200 to 275 calories throughout the day.
It is currently unknown how acetic acid produces these beneficial effects.
It is possible, however, that vinegar may interfere with the digestion of starches by inhibiting salivary amylase while delaying gastric emptying (moving food from your stomach into your small intestine).
Apple Cider Vinegar Recipe Drink
This is a great Apple Cider Vinegar recipe for a quick cocktail that you can drink before meals to help you lose weight faster. This drink consists of:
- Two teaspoons of Braggs’s ACV (I buy this brand myself and shake the bottle before serving)
- One teaspoon of lemon juice
- One teaspoon of whole cranberry juice (optional)
- Ginger (optional)
