So the question is, how can you support and strengthen your body to deal with a cold or the flu?
The best natural home remedies to help your body fight the common cold and flu are a trio of the following supplements:
PLUS! Fenugreek & Thyme to support the respiratory system as they sooth irritated tissues and keep the mucus thin.
These natural supplements are key for the flu season. I have tried them myself. They work. And I keep them in my medicine cabinet at all time.
Let’s take a look at more details about each of them.
Natural Home Remedy #1:
Olive Leaf Extract
The olive leaf extract is a potent antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agent that inhibits and prevents infection of a wide range of microbes such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, yeasts, and molds.
The olive leaf extract is kind of the underdog they don’t want you to know about.
- It’s been used for many years and by many cultures for medicinal purposes.
- It has also been studied by modern science as you can see in the hundreds of articles in PubMed.
Late in the 19th century, scientists isolated a compound from the olive leaf while studying its medicinal properties. This compound was named “oleuropein.”
Later on, a Dutch research team was able to isolate the active ingredient in oleuropein, which was called elenolic acid.
In the 60s, Upjohn, a division of Pfizer, investigated elenolic acid’s ability to fight viruses and was able to show that elenolic acid could inhibit the growth of viruses.
Moreover, elenolic acid was so powerful that it stopped every virus it was tested against, including a variety of viruses known to cause the common cold in humans.
Another group of researchers was able to isolate another form of elenolic acid, calcium elenolate. Likewise, calcium elenolate was able to fight viruses, bacteria, and parasitic agents.
Researchers found that calcium elenolate was no only effective, but also completely safe and nontoxic, even at high doses.
It is widely known and there’s plenty of research that olive leaf extract is a very effective antiviral and antibacterial agent.
It not only fights and kill invading pathogens, but it also stimulates your body’s own immune system to function more effectively when fighting microbes.
Other Benefits of Olive Leaf Extract
In addition to its anti-pathogenic properties, other groups of researchers have found other benefits important for human health:
- Olive leaf extract can promote relaxation of the arterial walls, which suggests that olive leaf extract can have an important role in fighting hypertension or high blood pressure.
- Olive leaf extract can help stabilize blood sugar levels.
- Olive leaf extract also inhibits oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), the so called “bad cholesterol.” Further research showed that oleuropein may contain valuable antioxidant properties.
There are more health benefits of olive leaf extract that you should know about and that are backed up by science. Dig in and you’ll be amazed.
I take Nature’s Sunshine’s Olive Leaf Extract to help my body fight a cold or the flu. The recommended dose is one capsule one to three times a day with food.
I’ve never taken the liquid extract; however, the liquid olive leaf extract has the additional benefit of being able to be applied externally to the skin for skin conditions.
In addition, liquid olive leaf extract has the advantage of directly touching affected areas like your mouth and throat and is more easily absorbed by the body.
Let’s take a look now at Colloidal Silver, a natural antimicrobial substance.
Natural Home Remedy #2:
Colloidal silver is a liquid with nanoparticles of silver suspended in it.
Nanoparticles are very tiny particles, so tiny that they are invisible to the naked eye. Nanoparticles also make it easy for the body to eliminate the way it is supposed to.
Silver is not new. Silver has been around for thousands of years for its antimicrobial effects.
Jim Powell, in the Science Digest edition of March 1978 mentioned that:
- Silver was used by more than half of the world’s airlines to protect against water-borne diseases such as dysentery.
- The Swiss government approved silver water filters for home and business use nationwide.
- After testing 23 methods of water purification, NASA chose a silver system for the space shuttle.
- Silver was commonly used to purify swimming pool water. To illustrate the disinfecting capabilities of silver, a demonstration took place in Nebraska in which fifty gallons of sewage, with a count of 7000 E. coli cells per milliliters, was poured into a pool without any disinfectant. Water was then flushed through silver electrodes and within three hours, the water was completely free of E. coli.
- Pioneers put silver coins in their milk jugs to keep milk drinkable as they crossed the plains.
- Some doctors used silver nitrate to help the healing of stomach ulcers.
In 1919, Alfred B. Searle, founder of Searle Pharmaceuticals, (now Monsanto), wrote in The Use of Colloids in Health and Disease:
The germicidal action of certain metals in the colloidal state having been demonstrated, it only remained to apply them to the human subject, and this has been done in a large number of cases with astonishingly successful results. For internal administration…it has the advantage of being rapidly fatal to pathogens without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable.
In the 1970s, Dr. Robert O. Becker (1923-2008), an orthopedic surgeon and researcher in electrophysiology, studied the effects of colloidal silver on electrochemical processes in the body.
Dr. Becker wrote about his research on the medical applications of silver in several of his best-selling books and published numerous articles about the efficacy of silver in various scientific journals.
In The Body Electric, he wrote:
Silver…killed or deactivated every type of bacteria without side effects, even with very low currents. We also tried the silver wires on bacteria grown in cultures of mouse connective tissue and bone marrow, and the ions wiped out the bacterial without affecting the living mouse cells. We were certain it was the silver ions that did the job, rather than the current, when we found that the silver-impregnated culture medium killed new bacterial placed in it even after the current was switched off. The only metal that had any effect was gold; it worked against Staphylococcus, but not nearly as well as silver.
Now, if you look up online about colloidal silver, you’ll quickly find information about the “blue man” and how you can turn blue if you take colloidal silver.
Let’s take a closer look.
What Is Argyria?
Argyria is a skin discoloration that results when hundreds of times the proper amount of silver compounds are injected or taken orally. Silver becomes deposited under the skin and stays there, harmlessly.
Silver still kills bacteria that may be present; nevertheless, nobody wants to turn blue or gray.
If you search the Internet, you’ll find the scary story of Paul Karason, the blue man.
Karason’s consumption of immoderately high, almost toxic doses of his homemade, non-colloidal silver preparation for many years caused his skin to turn permanently blue.
Not only his dosages were too high, but very frequent and greatly exceeded the dosage for any therapeutic regimen.
For instance, vitamin C is an essential vitamin. If you stop consuming vitamin C, you end up with scurvy.
However, if you take too much, you end up with lose bowels. How much is too much Vitamin C? In my case, when I tried it, I took about 50 grams in a window of about 8 hours.
Don’t fear colloidal silver.
Colloidal silver is your friend. At least mine. Close friends.
For instance, the concentration of Sovereign Silver’s product is so low that you could safely take 7 teaspoons every day for 70 years and never reach what even the EPA considers to be the lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL), a conservative minimum recommended amount. Keep in mind that EPA guidelines are based on an average adult weight of 70 kg or 154 pounds.
At first symptoms, I take a colloidal silver solution, one tablespoon seven times a day as recommended by Sovereign Silver’s short-term immune support dose. This will prevent my cold or flu from taking hold.
I definitely recommend Sovereign Silver and Nature’s Sunshine.
Notice that they also have a silver gel for use on your skin (external use). Interesting!
Now, let’s take a look at our third natural home remedy.
Natural Home Remedy #3:
Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is the dark purple berry from the European elder tree.
Elderberry has a tremendous antioxidant capacity, antiviral, immunoprotective/immunostimulatory properties, and it also increases the production and inflammatory cytokynes.
In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted in 1993, elderberry actually does inhibit the replication of strains of human influenza viruses, both A and B.
In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted in 1993, subjects infected with influenza B and who were given elderberry extract recovered much quicker than those who were given a placebo.
In only 3 days, over 90% of people who took the elderberry extract had completely resolved the infection.
However, the placebo group started to feel better after 6 days.
In the study, they found that people who took the elderberry extract had a stronger, quicker immune response as shown by their elevated anti-haemagglutination titers to influenza B.
In other words, subjects who took elderberry were able to fight off the flu virus more efficiently, and they were also better prepared to handle a future infection.
Elderberry inhibits neuraminidase, an enzyme that cleaves sialic acid groups from glycoproteins and is required for the influenza virus to replicate.
I take elderberry in either syrup or capsule form.
For Syrup Elderberry, I take Nature’s Way Sambucus Sugar-Free Elderberry Syrup. Just follow the recommended dose for adults and children.
And for capsules, I take Nature’s Sunshine Elderberry D3fense. I take the recommended dose of a capsule three times a day with food.
Bonus Home Remedy:
Fenugreek & Thyme
Fenugreek & Thyme can be used as a nutritional support for the respiratory system.
The herb contains mucilaginous compounds, which are gel-like substances known for their ability to help soothe mucous membranes.
Fenugreek also encourages thinner mucus, which can help with relief of occasional upper respiratory discomfort.
In other words, I use Fenugreek & Thyme to open my nasal passages, unblock my sinuses, and get rid of the mucus faster!
And yes, it works!
I take Nature’s Sunshine Fenugreek & Thyme supplement.
At the first sign of symptoms of a cold or the flu, I just follow the recommended dose on the label. This will help my body fight the cold or flu and prevent it from advancing.
I also drink a lot of water and rest!
Chicken soup is good too. Why? Because when your body is under attack, it increments the production of antibodies.
Chicken soup provides you with a load of easily digestible proteins (amino acids), the raw material your body needs to make antibodies, and antibodies are made of proteins (chains of amino acids).
I always keep these four supplements at home.
I use them when I need to. And my kids too. Why? Because they are safe and they work.
Note that I’ve added scientific references to all three natural remedies, so don’t be fooled by the negative comments you may find online.
Hint: naturally occurring substances cannot be patented.
Please check my Disclosure page for my Nature’s Sunshine account information.
And lastly, I’m not diagnosing, treating, or curing any diseases here. I’m only providing tools to enhance the structure and function of the body to help the body heal itself.
I hope this post was informative!
